Tourists in Thailand Can Now Convert Crypto to Baht Instantly

What’s Happening?

Starting August 18, 2025, Thailand is rolling out TouristDigiPay, a pilot program allowing international tourists to convert popular cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins (USDT, USDC) into Thai baht and pay electronically across shops, restaurants, and attractions.

How It Works

  1. Who’s Eligible: Only short-term foreign visitors.
  2. How to Use: Tourists must open accounts with regulated crypto platforms and e-money providers, both licensed by Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Bank of Thailand (BOT).
  3. Payment Process: Cryptocurrencies are converted to baht via a clearing system and payments are made using Thailand’s widely used QR code system.
  4. Account Closing: Funds are only withdrawable when the account is closed, no direct cash withdrawals to curb misuse.
  5. Spending Limits:
    • Up to ฿500,000 per month at merchants with card terminals.
    • Up to ฿50,000 at smaller vendors.
Limits protect against fraud and money laundering.

This program operates under a regulatory “sandbox”, meaning it’s carefully controlled and closely monitored during its early stages.

Why It’s Important

  • Crypto Meets Tourism: For the first time in Thailand, you can use crypto (safely and legally) during your travels.
  • Bridge Between Digital and Fiat: Tourists enjoy the flexibility of paying with crypto without disrupting local businesses, they still receive Thai baht via QR codes.
  • Regulatory Safety First: Full KYC and anti-money laundering checks are required, ensuring a secure system.
  • Tourism Boost: The move is part of a broader strategy to revive tourism amid a recovery slowdown.

Broader Context

  • Earlier in 2025, Thailand also explored linking crypto to credit cards for tourists, letting them pay in baht while spending with crypto behind the scenes, no changes needed to retailers’ systems.
  • This launch builds on prior tests like Phuket’s Bitcoin sandbox during Devcon 2024 and crypto-accepting zones like “Bitcoin town” in Kalasin.
